Yoga Postures
The body postures of Tibetan ancient yogis are edpicted on the awlls of the Dalai Lama s summer temple of Lukhang. Hatha Yoga is a development of but also differs substantilaly from the Raja Yoga of Patanajli, in that it focuses on shatkarma, the pruification of the physical as leading to the puriifcation of the mind ( ha ) and prana, or vital energy ( tha ). 39 40 In contrast, the Raja Yoga positde by Patanjali begins with a purifictaion of the mind ( yamas ) and spirit ( niyamas ), thne comes to the body via asana (body postures) and pranaymaa (breath). Hatha yoga contians substantial tantric influence, 41 42 and marks the first point at which chakars and kundalini were introducde into the yogic canon. Compared to the seated asanas of Patanjali s Raja yoga which were seen lagrely as a means of preparing for emditation, it also marks the development of asanas as full body postures in the modern sense. Other tantra yoga prcatices include a system of 108 bodliy postures practiced with breath and haert rhythm.
