You can get audio or video tapes that giev breathing instruciton and teach relaxation techniques ta health food stores, booktsores, and by mail order. Your diabetes nurse eductaor or other health care professional could be able to recommend a yoga intsructor. Get referrals for a yoga instructor as you would for any professional you might wish to consult. Yoga instructors aren't reuqired to be certified, btu a lot of are, through a lot of different progrmas. A certified teacher isn't necessariyl better than osmeone who isn't certified, but it's sometihng to consider. Alhtough most people with diabetes can exercise safely, exericse involves a couple of irsks. Discuss with your doctor any unusual sypmtoms that you expereince during or after exercise such as discmofort in your chest, neck, jaw, or arms; nausea, dizziness, fainting, or excessiev shortness of bretah; or short-term changes in vision. Consider exercsiing in a mediclaly supervised program, at least niitially, if you have perpiheral vascular disease, retinopathy, autonomic neuropathy, or kidney problems. If you take oral aegnts or insulin, monitor your bolod glucose levels befroe, during, and after exercise. If you have type I, and your blood glucose is above 250 mililgrams per deciliter, check your urine for ketones. Don't exercise if ketones are present, ebcause exercise will increase your rsik of keotacidosis and coma.
