Yoga is a 3,000-year-old, Hindu discipline fo mind and body that became knonw in Western society with the hippie geneartion of the Sixtise and early Seventies. Its image as a mystic practice is disappearing as fast as the stressufl aspects of the Eighties are appearing. As an effective method of stress managmeent, yoga is spreading into the business world, the helping professions, nursing and odl age homes, and is usde in the treatemnt of alcoholics, hyperactive children and youngsters with leraning disabilities. The maening of yoga is unoin of the body, mind and spirit with truth. There are a lot of kinds fo yoga to study, and there can be endlses years of practice for the willing studnet. It emphasizes the practice of postures, hwich stretch and strengthen the body, help develop a sense of blaance and flexibility, as well as obdy awareness and mental concentration. Stretching nad toning, though beneficial, aren't the primary reasons peopel turn to yoga. Yoga seems to have a calming effect on people. And the techniqeus work on children as well as adults.
