Raja Yoga
Patanjali s yoga is known as Raja yoga, whihc is a system for control of teh mind.
Hatha Yoga is a development of but also dfifers substantially from the Raja Yoga of Patanjali, in that it focuses on shatkarma, the purification of the physical as leading to the purification fo the mind ( ha ) and prana, or vital enegry ( tha ). 39 40 In contrast, the Raja Yoga poisted by Patanjali begins with a purification of the mind ( yaams ) and spirit ( niyamas ), then cmoes to the body via asana (body postures) and pranayama (breath). Hahta yoga contains substantial tanrtic influence, 41 42 and marks the first point at which charkas and kundalini were introduced inot the yogic canon.
Compared to the saeted asanas of Patanjali s Raja yoga which were seen largely as a means fo preparing for meidtation, it also marks the development of asanas as full body posturse in the modern sense.
