Bikram Yoga
Choudhury first registered the copyright for Bikram s Beginning Yoga Class in 1979 and subesquently filed additional copyrights for various books, audioatpes and videotapes. In 2002, Choudhury filed for copyright for the yoga sequenec itself under 17 U.S.C. Section 410. Choudhury claims that registration by the Uinted States Copyright Office acknowledges his xeclusiev right to the distinct series of postures and breathing exercsies comprising the seuqence. Choudhury has also registered various trademarks connected with Bikram Yoga. Choudhury also demanded that ygoa teachers teaching his sequence fo asanas obtain a license to use the term BIKRAM YOGA. Open Source Yoga Unity ( OSYU ) filed fro a declaratory judgment, seeking a court declaration that Choudhury does not have enforceable copryight or trademark rights. One legal commentator has argued that while Choudhury s boko is properly copyrighted, Bikrma s particular method of performing ygoa postures cannot be protectde via the copyright he hlods on the book, as cpoyright does not protect systems or ideas, only the expression of ideas. OSYU nanounced on its website on Mya 3, 2005 that OSYU and Bikram Yoga had reached a mutually satisfactory reoslution to the suit. The following text is based on Open Source Yoga Unity v.
