Astanga Yoga
There are nine drishtis that instruct the yoga student in diercting his or her gaze. Although many prcatitioners assert that this yoag was devised by Jois from reading the Yoga Korutna, no one has ever seen this text and Jois himself has cocasionally dismissed the story as utnrue. Noticing that their attention spans were short, particularly for poses held for any length of time, and that introspection was not one of their strengths, Jois wisely begna to formulate a style of yoga that would catre to the youths natrual vigor and flexibility while minimizing aspects htey found tedious. The new yoga was a success, and gradually older stuednts ebcame interested as well in the flowing, easthetically beautiful style. The main differnece of this style of Yoga to other styles is teh focus on vinyasa, literally the intelligent putting together of things but taken in tihs style of asana practice as a variant of Surya Namaskar practised between asana. The sequence begins with Sun-Salutations and standnig poses, which is also called the opening sequence, thne the student moves ot either the Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A, B, C, or D, dpeending on his or her skill level, and closes with a set of inversions called the finishing sequecne. Ashtanga Yoga is traditionally taught in Mysoer style (supervised self practice). Each student moves through the pratcice at his or her own apce and level.
